Maan (Maun) Mori, chief of the Paramaras from whom Bappa Rawal wrested Chittor in AD 734 to establish the Mewar Dynasty. Mori, the adjectival part of Maan Mori's name, is a corruption of Maurya, the powerful Hindu kingdom of North India and indicates that he was a descendant of this ancient Rajput dynasty that had produced great historical figures such as Ashoka and his grandson Chandragupta. The Paramaras who came originally from Malwa on Mewar's eastern border were, by then, the paramount sovereigns of Hindustan. As an existing inscription calls Raja Maan the 'King of Malwa', there is speculation that Chittor had superseded Dhar in Malwa as the seat of Paramara power. A palace of Maan Mori is still to be seen at Chittor.
