Umaid Singh, Raja Dhiraj, a noble of Shahpura during the reign of Maharana Ari Singh II (1761-1773). Many of Mewar's nobles were against Ari Singh. However, the Maharana wooed Umaid Singh to his side and gave him the Paragna Kachola. Umaid wanted to make his younger son, Zalam Singh, his successor at Shahpura, therefore he poisoned his elder son, Udyot Singh. He even wanted to kill his grandson (Udyot's son), Ran Singh, and sent a soldier to commit this heinous act. The soldier struck at Ran Singh but missed, only wounding him. At this moment, Ran Singh's son, Bhim Singh, who was only 14, killed the soldier, and Umaid's intention to make Zalam his successor was not fulfilled. Umaid died at Ujjain for the Maharana against Madhav Rao Scindia (see UJJAIN, BATTLE OF), and his grandson, Ran Singh, succeed him as Raja Dhiraj of Shahpura, followed by his son, Bhim Singh.
