Ramata Gulab Kuwarji Charitable Trust

Introduction
The Rajmata Gulab Kuwarji Charitable Trust assists women and children, particularly from Mewar and Rajasthan. The trust deeds specify that the funds available should be for the welfare of the women of Mewar in particular and women in general. Financial aid to the poor, grants and scholarships or loans to deserving students, donations to or the founding of educational establishments for girls and women is the main thrust of this programme. Medical relief to women including support to hospitals, maternity homes, sanatoriums or dispensaries; the establishment of homes for old and destitute women, and the establishment of or assistance to vocational training centres for women, are also inclusive under the tenants of this trust.

Her late Highness Rajmata Gulab Kuwarji Sahiba of Mewar was a very devout lady. She was a philanthropist in every sense of the word. Her concern was for the welfare and upliftment of humanity in general, and women in particular. In her last will and testament, she bequeathed all her immovable assets to a Trust that was to be created specially for the prosperity and welfare of women in Mewar. In accordance with her wishes, her son, Maharana Bhagwat Singhji of Mewar, founded this Trust on 3rd January 1973, for the benefit of the women of Mewar.

The objectives of the Trust are:

  • Assistance to the poor.
  • Spread of women's education including grant of scholarship or loans to deserving students, donations to institutions and imparting education and training to girls and women.
  • Medical relief to women including the establishment of or support to hospitals, dispensaries and maternity homes.
  • The establishments of old age homes and homes for the destitute.
  • Assistance to vocational training centres for women, or the establishment of such institutions.
  • Other such charitable purposes as the Trustees may deem fit from time to time.
The main aim of Trust is the upliftment of disadvantaged women of Mewar and Rajasthan. This is undertaken by providing parvarish aid, donations and scholarships to poor and needy women, to support the cause of medical relief and maternity welfare and to extend generous donations for the maintenance and preservation of heritage - historical buildings and temples.

Since its inception, this Trust has worked towards emancipation of the women of Mewar. It supports and extends benefits to the impeded women members of Mewar society. It aims to provide charity, donations, scholarships and medical relief to them. However, the Trust does not merely hand out funds. There are criteria for the distribution of financial assistance.

Parvarish awards stipends and pensions to the erstwhile women staff members of the House of Mewar. For example, in the month of April 1999, 70 women received welfare from this Trust. Parvarish in its literal interpretation is to support and sustain. There has been a timeless bond between the palace and its people. A bond that was not obligated by any constitution but was built on a voluntary desire and inclination to continue its association. This relationship was based on traditions created by the people of Mewar and to sever these ties with the old retainers in the present would be contrary to reason. more ...

Therefore there arises a need to perpetuate old values, which the people can identify with - to give them a feeling of belonging without the individual's loss of pride and self-respect.

The objective of this scheme, thus, is to provide an anchorage to the women and children, particularly of Mewar and Rajasthan, so that in the long run, they not only develop a sense of security but are able to be completely self reliant. These women who have been an integral part of the state's customs and culture are a rich database of long standing traditions.

Scholarships are awarded to women students of Udaipur so as to help them achieve their academic goals. Under this Trust, only one female student per month is subsidized. In the month of April 1999 one female student of Udaipur received a scholarship for pursuing studies in B.E. at the Malviya Regional Engineering College, Jaipur. more ...

For the Maintenance and Preservation of Old Heritage, regular expenses are incurred in the month towards security, repairing and maintenance of the properties under the Trust.

Donations in the form of medical assistance are also offered to women. However, the extent of the donation isn't limited. Donations are also made towards assisting in marriages or benefiting Children's Funds etc. more ...
